Sitting on the edge of the White Mountain Wilderness in Maine, Blueberry Mountain (1,781’) is a wonderful destination for a day trip from the Portland region. Rattlesnake Pool is fed by small horsetails, each only 3 or 4 feet in height. What a great hike! The trail head for White Cairn Trail will be on your left after about a quarter mile, and the trail head for Stone House Trail and Rattlesnake Pool will be on your left after about a half mile. Walk .3 miles, and you’ll see the trailhead for White Cairn Trail on your left, and a trail for Shell Pond trail on your right. And it is very cold! It was brutally hot the day that I did this hike, so that made the hike more difficult. Next bear left onto Blueberry Mountain Road and go 0.1 mile. I recommend heading up the White Cairn Trail, doing the little summit loop at the top, and then heading back down Stone House Trail to Rattlesnake Pool (a spur trail off to the left).There are steep sections on this mountain, but they don’t go on too long. The Stone House Trail, which is entirely in the woods until reaching the summit, starts out very wide and flat and stays that way until reaching the side trail to Rattlesnake Pool after walking for about a mile.
